Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

My question pertains to Mark 3:28-29. How does a person blaspheme against the Holy Spirit? Can a person blaspheme against the Holy Spirit unaware?

Q. My question pertains to Mark 3:28-29. How does a person blaspheme against the Holy Spirit? Can a person blaspheme against the Holy Spirit unaware?

A. The only example of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit we have is when the Pharisees accused Jesus of using Satan’s power to perform miracles, when He was actually using the power of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 12:24).

I do not believe it’s possible for a believer to commit this sin, consciously or unconsciously. For example, some Corinthians accused other believers of cursing Jesus while speaking in tongues, but Paul in effect told them it was impossible because of the Holy Spirit’s presence within them. (1 Cor. 12:3) The same would hold true for us.
