My Buddhist Relatives

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

Coming from an eastern country, my Buddhist relatives asked me (a Christian) to take them to the temple for prayer. Is it proper for me to oblige or to reject?

Q. Coming from an eastern country, my Buddhist relatives asked me (a Christian) to take them to the temple for prayer. Is it proper for me to oblige or to reject?

A. I would oblige out of kindness and use the opportunity to open a discussion about their beliefs and yours. There has been some discussion about Jesus in Buddhist circles and you might get their reaction to Him based on what they’ve been told and then describe Him from your knowledge. Obviously you would decline to join them in their temple, but refusing to take them would do more to discourage a discussion than promote one.
