The Lilith Myth

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

Where did the whole Lilith myth originate? Could you elaborate on this?

Q. Where did the whole Lilith myth originate? Could you elaborate on this?

A. There are at least two sets of myths regarding Lilith. One originated in Sumerian and Akkadian mythology about 3000 BC and portrays Lilith as a demon who preys on females and children. In Babylonian mythology Lilith evolved into the handmaiden of Ishtar in charge of sexuality, prostitution and fertility.

The other one showed up in Jewish folklore where Lilith was seen as the supposed first wife of Adam, the dark side of the feminine divine, who refused to be submissive and left Adam to consort with demons. This one is apparently still popular due to the current fascination with the Jewish Kabbala. This being a “G” rated site, that’s about as far as I can go.
