Controversy Over Tongues

Please interpret this passage, as you believe what Paul is saying regarding the Gentiles?

“Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led”. (This is from 1 Cor. 12:2 in the KJV)

Q. Please interpret this passage, as you believe what Paul is saying regarding the Gentiles?

Does this mean Gentiles are now Jews? Or,
Does this mean the Gentiles are now believers in Jesus Christ, having become “Born Again”, yet remain Gentiles?

A. Paul divided mankind into three groups, Jews, Gentiles and the Church. (1 Cor. 10:32) In writing to Corinth, he was addressing Gentiles who had been born again and were now members of the Church. As such they were neither Jew nor Gentile.

Evidently some who didn’t speak in tongues were saying that those who did were under the influence of their pagan idols and were actually cursing Jesus. Paul said that since their idols couldn’t speak, then no one speaking in tongues could be influenced by their idols to say “Jesus be cursed.” Conversely only a person under the influence of the Holy Spirit can say, “Jesus is Lord.” It was the first of many instances where jealousy over the gift of tongues has caused controversy in the Church.
