Establish Our Work

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

I was wondering what does it mean when someone asks God to establish the work of their hands?

Q. I was wondering what does it mean when someone asks God to establish the work of their hands?

Thanks again for sharing your insight and teaching us.

A. Psalm 90:17 says, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.”

I believe it’s a prayer that the Lord would bless, strengthen and build upon what a person is called to do. The Hebrew word for establish means to set up, to make stable, secure, enduring. It’s most frequently translated “to prepare” as in going before, or making ready. It could relate to clearing away any distraction or interference that could weaken our effect.
