Breaking Curses

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

We used to go to church where the preacher preached time and again, on generational sin. He taught that we needed to break generational curses. What do you believe the scripture teaches on this?

Thank you, for your attention in this matter.

A. This is a controversial teaching that I’ve heard preached on several occasions. Exodus 20:5 says that the Lord will visit the sins of the fathers upon the children to the 3rd and 4th generation of those who hate Him.

Galatians 3:13 says that the Lord redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. Maybe I’m not seeing the whole picture, but in my mind that settled it. When we come to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus, any curses against us are broken.

Any other view concedes that the power of Satan is greater than the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit when 1 John 4:4 says just the opposite.
