Can We Miss Our Chance?

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

Q. Say somebody is past the age of accountability, so he is responsible for his sins in God’s eyes. His life goes on, and he is still unsaved when something occurs, an accident for example what causes him such brain damage that he becomes mentally handicapped.

Are people like this doomed for eternity? Or will the Lord in His mercy give them salvation, not holding against them their former sins?

A. You’ve made a great case for not putting off our decision for Christ.

It’s my personal opinion based on Romans 8:28 that God, who has known from the time of creation who will accept him and who won’t, protects those who will become His until the time He has appointed for their calling. He doesn’t lose any that are his.

But although God knows all things, we’ll never know how much time we’ll have. Tomorrow may be too late. The only way to receive salvation is to accept the Lord’s pardon. Those who have the mental capacity to do that are admonished to do so while they can, never knowing if they’ll have another day. (Hebrews 3:15)
