Does Micah 5 Identify The Anti-Christ As An Assyrian?
Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher
Q. Re: Micah 5 Please comment on the context of this chapter. Is this not speaking of Jesus the Messiah and his defeating the anti-christ (The Assyrian) at his 2nd coming?
A. There are three separate prophecies in view here. Micah 5:1-5 is not connected to vs. 6-9, and neither passage is connected to Vs. 10-15. In the first 5 verses Micah foretold the birthplace of the Messiah (v.2), the abandonment of the land following their rejection of Him (v.3) and the peace they would enjoy in the Millennium after they finally recognize Him (vs. 4-5).
Micah 5:6-9 foretell of the Southern Kingdom’s victory over the Assyrians who had dispersed the the vanquished remnant of the northern Kingdom among the nations that made up the Assyrian Empire. These were the mis-named lost 10 tribes. We know this because the southern Kingdom is always called Judah while their northern cousins were variously referred to as Israel, Jacob, or Ephraim.
Micah 5:10-15 begins with the phrase “in that day” which means that its an end times passage. It’s a warning to the nations that have not obeyed God that at the End of the Age they’ll be on the receiving end of His Wrath. Notice how the Lord speaks of “your land” in verse 11. He always called Israel “My land”. Verse 15 is a summary statement of the preceding 5 verses.
