Where Do Demons Come From?

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

Are Demons Fallen Angels? I say they are not, but a Christian friend once told me that they are. Who is right and who is wrong?

Q. Are Demons Fallen Angels? I say they are not but a Christian friend once told me that they are. Who is right and who is wrong?

A. There are several theories about demons. One comes from Judaism and states that demons are the disembodied spirits of evil people who’ve died. Another is that they are the spirits of the Nephilim who perished during the flood. And another, my favorite, claims that they are fallen angels who were judged with Satan.

On Creation Day 2 when God made the atmosphere , He didn’t pronounce His work “Good” like He did on every other day. Some believe that it’s because Satan, the Ruler of the Kingdom of the Air, (Ephes.2:2) and his demonic horde immediately inhabited it. If that’s true, I think it’s poetic justice that at the Rapture, the Church meets the Lord in the air. In other words we parade through Satan’s front yard on the way to Heaven while he watches helplessly.
