Understanding Zechariah 12:2-3

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

Q. RE: Zechariah 12:2-3. My Bible notes say this passage is talking about before a battle right before Armageddon but it certainly does seem to describe how the World is feeling about Gaza and Israel right now. What do you think?

A. Zechariah 12:2-3 reads,  “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem.  On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves.’”

Most scholars, myself included,  believe this prophecy will find its ultimate fulfillment in the run up to the Battle of Armageddon.  But by watching the current headlines you can see how easily the world can be brought into contention against Israel.  Israel’s enemies can say and do almost anything, but if Israel lifts a finger in self defense, the world cries foul.
