Will David Be King Again?

Q. Our Sunday school class is studying David (1 and 2 Samuel) and generated the following question: Does it state or suggest that King David will rule (in the new earth or the New Jerusalem) under the authority of Jesus?

We’d deeply appreciate your scriptural knowledge regarding David as king under Jesus’ authority in the future.

A.  Ezekiel 34:23-24 says:

I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.  I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the LORD have spoken.

In Ezekiel 37:24 we read:

My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.

When Ezekiel wrote these verses, David had been dead for 400 years, so Ezekiel was obviously speaking of the future.

And of the 2nd Coming,  Zechariah 14:9 says:

The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.

In the Millennium, David, or more likely a direct descendant of his, will rule over Israel.  He will be subordinate to Jesus, King of the whole Earth.  I believe it’s a descendant of David’s because he has to offer a sin offering for himself on Passover and on Tabernacles.
