Outer Space

Posted in: Ask a Bible Teacher

Recently when having an informal bible study with a friend, we had a discussion about man’s attempts to explore space, and how that fits with what the bible tells us about the current, fallen state of man and space for that matter. Should we be poking around “out there”?

Q. Recently when having an informal bible study with a friend, we had a discussion about man’s attempts to explore space, and how that fits with what the bible tells us about the current, fallen state of man and space for that matter. Should we be poking around “out there”? It’s hard not to look up at the stars and wonder in awe of God, and His creation. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks very much for your site, it continues to be a valuable tool in my studies!

A. I personally can’t see any Biblical prohibition against space exploration. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-2)

This being the case, it seems likely that a believer would expect to learn more about God through the study of outer space, as you’ve indicated.
