Are God’s Promises Conditional?

Q. I was reading the bible and noticed in 2Kings where God told Hezekiah that he would die ,but when he repented, God took the judgment off and gave him another 15 years. So does that mean what God says or promises is conditional. If God told someone that they wouldn’t die, and then they commit a serious sin, can God let the person die.

A. First, there’s nothing to indicate that Hezekiah’s impending death was a judgment from God. 2 Kings 20:1 says only that he became ill.

Second, countless times in history and up to the present time, men and women have contracted terminal diseases and been “scheduled” for death only to be healed as the result of prayer. The lesson from Hezekiah’s story is that God hears our prayers and can change the outcome of events that affect us, including life threatening diseases.

Although God has told certain people they would die at a given time, like Moses for example (Deut. 32:48-52), there’s no record of Him saying a person would not die, and then breaking His promise.
