Coming Food Shortages?

Q

I hear rumors of coming food shortages because of the bad weather all over the US. They say to stock up on food, water, gas (if possible) and guns and ammo because there will be riots when the grocery stores run out. Do you think there is any truth to this? I know it will be like that after the Rapture but before? I know we are not suppose to store up treasure here on earth and not be frightened by whats to come. So do you think God sees us as weak, not trusting in him if we collect a few things just in case?

A

I don’t see anything wrong with having some essentials stored up for emergency purposes. Since the nearest supermarket is a 3-4 hour round trip for us, we tend to keep a little extra on the shelves in case we can’t get to the store on short notice. The problem I have is with people who advocate having months or even years worth of food and other things stored up. This is a specific contradiction of the Bible’s instruction against storing up treasure on earth (Matt. 6:19-21, Luke 12:16-21).

To me, excessive storage also demonstrates a greedy “me first” attitude where people are hoarding more than they need even when it means others will not have enough. Many say they are putting this excess aside to have enough to share later, but I don’t believe it. If they had an attitude of sharing they would be sharing now. They are ignoring the Lord’s instructions to “give and it will be given to you … for with the measure you use it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38).
