Is Miscarriage An Act Of God?

Q

When a young married lady has a miscarriage I have been told that sometimes, if something is wrong with the fetus, nature sometimes steps in to handle it. Do you think that God would intervene in a matter such as this? This is a strong Christian couple that I know could handle the situation. However, I was just wondering what God’s plan might be in this situation? Are there any scripture that I could use to help this couple?

A

According to Isaiah 65:20 the elimination of infant death is a characteristic of the Millennium, after the curse is gone. During this age these things happen because “the whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 John 5:19). This is why bad things happen to believers and unbelievers alike.

Calling a pre-born child a fetus and saying that miscarriage is a case of “nature stepping in to handle things” is a man-made concept and does not come from God. If it did it wouldn’t be inconsistent with His character. He is the author of life after all.

Since the Bible says life begins at conception (Psalm 139:13-14) and children under the age of understanding have eternal life (Romans 7:9), this couple’s child is whole and perfect and is with the Lord awaiting their arrival in Heaven. Making sure they understand that is the best way to give them comfort. It also happens to be the truth, unlike the platitude about nature stepping in.
