What Does John 9:4 Mean?

Q

Re. John 9:4. What does Jesus mean when he says that the night is coming when no man can work? Did it come then? Or is it for this time?

A

Lets’ take a look at John 9:4-5 together.

As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Jesus was speaking about His time of ministry on Earth, calling it “day”. Then he said night is coming when no one can work. This signified the end of His earthly ministry. Finally He said, “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Luke 22:53 tells of the night of the Lord’s Arrest, when Jesus said to the Temple leaders, “Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour–when darkness reigns.”

The end of His ministry was near. The Light of the World was about to be taken from the world. It was night, the hour of His enemy, when no one could work.
