Luke Warm Believers

Q

Our pastor had recently made the comment that if we do not tithe and give ten percent in our offering that we are luke warm believers. I thought that luke warm believers will not be saved. Can I get your opinion on this?

A

In Rev. 3:16 Jesus said He was about to spit the lukewarm believers of Laodicea out of His mouth, but I don’t believe His issue with them concerned tithing. They were so well off in life they didn’t think they needed anything, even a Savior.

Tithing is generally considered to be one of the characteristics of a strong believer, but it’s not a salvation issue. It’s an indication of our gratitude for the blessings we’ve received. Failing to tithe is a sign that we either don’t understand what the Lord has done for us or we do understand and have taken it for granted. If it’s the latter, that’s probably what your pastor meant by being lukewarm.
