OSAS And Matt 8:10-12

Q

Re: Matt. 8:10-12. I believe in OSAS but as I read this passage I wonder if my belief is misplaced. Here we have the Sons of the Kingdom! But they are being cast out? Why are they being cast out? What did they do to cause them to be cast out? This verse says, they are in the kingdom of Heaven!!! This bothers me. I must be missing something, It just doesn’t sound like you’re always saved. Please explain and pray for me.

Here’s Matthew 8: 10-12:

Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

You have a couple of errors in interpretation here. First, remember that Matt. 8: 5-13 is about healing a Gentile Roman soldier’s servant and the faith he demonstrated verses the faith of the people of Israel (Jews).

Second, the phrase “sons of the Kingdom” refers to the Jewish people. It doesn’t imply that they were currently in Heaven, only that the Kingdom was intended for them. It was to be their inheritance.

The Lord was warning them that because of their lack of faith, the Jewish people were in danger of losing their inheritance and being cast into the outer darkness instead, while many who would come from the East and the West (Gentiles) would be seated in the kingdom of Heaven with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

They thought they were assured a place in the kingdom because of their heritage. His message is that it’s our faith that saves us, not our bloodline.

He repeated this warning in Matt. 21:43 saying, “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.”
