Spotting Giftedness

Q

I believe in the gifts of the Spirit, but how do we recognize them in ourselves mechanically speaking? Do you know of any studies that spell out what the exact signs are that you may have a particular gift? Any help is appreciated. God Bless.

A

There aren’t any real formulas for this, and you should be wary of anyone who tries to tell you there are. But I think one good way (after applying Romans 12:2) is to get a concordance and study Romans 12:6-8, Ephesians 4:11, and 1 Cor. 12:4-11, 27-28. Learn what the Greek word for each gift means so you’ll know what each gift does and can recognize it when you see it. Many people don’t believe they have a gift because they don’t know that the gifts are, so they don’t realize when they’re using one.

Then ask God to alert you when your behavior shows that you are manifesting a gift. You will probably notice that you’re doing something you wouldn’t normally be able to do. For example, you may suddenly have a very clear understanding of a Bible passage, or know for certain that a prayer will be answered even though others around you doubt it, or feel an overwhelming urge to pray for someone, etc.

Obviously I’ve listed only a few examples, but through your study you’ll learn how to spot the others. You’ll also find that people will tell you when they see a gift in you.
