The Consequences Of Sin

I have a question about the story of Bathsheba and David. After David repented, there was still a terrible consequence, and the baby died. I’ve always wondered why the baby suffered for his father, but then I though maybe this was all a picture of something else!

Q. Thank you again so much for this site! I have learned so much and continue to. I have a question about the story of Bathsheba and David. After David repented, there was still a terrible consequence, and the baby died. I wondered if that was an analogy of our terrible sin, and the fact that God’s Son had to lose his life for it. Any ideas? Or am I reading into it to much. I’ve always wondered why the baby suffered for his father, but then I though maybe this was all a picture of something else!

A. There’s no mention of the baby’s suffering. The child was ill for seven days and then died. Upon dying he went directly to be with the Lord where he began an eternity of blessing with out having to endure any of the disappointments and hardships of this life.

I think the lesson here is that being forgiven in heaven for our sins doesn’t automatically relieve us of the earthly consequences of our actions.

If we take a gun and rob a convenience store and then ask the Lord to forgive us, He will. But if we’re arrested and convicted, we’ll still go to jail.
