Was Satan One Of The Cherubim?

Q

In one of your studies, you mention that Satan was once one of the cherubim, meaning there used to be five cherubim at the throne of God. Is there any Biblical support for your claim? I’ve never heard of this. I thought Satan was an archangel.

A

Referring to Satan, the Lord had Ezekiel say, “You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.” (Ezekiel 28:14). This means Satan was chosen along with four other cherubim to guard the Throne of God (cherubim is the plural form of cherub). It’s not that God needs anyone to guard Him, they serve more of a ceremonial role.

The Bible only names one archangel, Michael. Certain extra-Biblical sources claim there may be as many as six others in addition to Michael. But to my knowledge there is no reputable source that identifies Satan as an archangel.
