This week’s Feature Article by Jack Kelley

After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”

“Yes, he does,” he replied.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?”

“From others,” Peter answered.

“Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus said to him. “But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.” (Matt. 17:24-27)

Who Are We, Really?

The Bible doesn’t give us very much detail about the Church in the New Jerusalem. Most of what we can read about the Kingdom Age (Millennium) is in the Old Testament and concerns Israel’s life on Earth during that time. But the New Testament does contain two models of the Church. One is the Bride of Christ and the other is the Royal Family. Most of us are more familiar with the Bride model, probably because it’s more pertinent to our earthly relationships.

The other model, that of a Royal Family, is actually more relevant to our life in the Millennium. For example, I think the phrase “rule and reign with Him” really describes the Royal Family model. Although the Bible has more to say about the Royal Family than it does about the Bride, most of aren’t as familiar with what it says. For this reason I want to focus on the Royal Family model in this study.

This idea has been running around in my mind since I did some additional research on Rev. 5:9-10 recently for my series on Rapture References. There’s no question that verse 9 describes the church. At issue is whether verse 10 should be read as “Kings and Priests” or as “a kingdom and priests”. (I’ll compare the two versions for you later.) As the Mathew passage above shows, there’s a big difference between being part of a kingdom and being in the Royal Family. And it’s not just about paying taxes. The life of the Royal Family is very different from that of other members of the kingdom.

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:12-13)

The first time we were born we were merely part of the vast creation. But when we were born again we received the authority to become members of God’s own family. Paul said it like this.

“When we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir” (Gal.4:3-7).

Just so you would know he was serious about being one of God’s heirs, Paul said it again.

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ … (Romans 8:17).

Think about that for a minute. Co-heirs with Christ. What does that mean? Remember, in the Temple Tax incident above Jesus didn’t say “The Son is exempt,”meaning Himself, but “The sons are exempt,” including us.

In Psalm 2:8 God said to Him, “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”

If Planet Earth is His inheritance and we’re co-heirs with Him, then everything that comes from it will accrue to our benefit. Royal Families don’t have to worry about supporting themselves. Their support comes from the proceeds of the kingdom. Since the Earth is our inheritance, should we expect the people of Earth to support us in the Millennium? Let’s ask John.

I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. (Rev. 21:22-26)

The splendor, glory and honor of Earth will be brought to us in the New Jerusalem. The very best the planet has to offer during a time when there’s no more curse to inhibit its production will be reserved for us.

It was always in God’s mind that His Church would become His Royal Family. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (Romans 8:29)

Do You Work Here?

People often ask me, “What are we going to do in the Millennium?” or “What kind of work does God have in mind for us?” Here’s where Americans have to read our world history again. Did royals ever work? No. They always pursued the finer things of life. One of the reasons they’re called nobility is because their lives are devoted to more noble pursuits. They get the best of everything and their every need is met in a luxurious way. Because they’re fallen, sinful beings some of them have wasted their lives and disgraced themselves, but you and I will be divested of our sin nature. We’ll be pure and perfected, and instead of acting in a manner that’s beneath us like some earthly nobles do, we’ll aspire to be our very best. And the prototype for the very best is King Jesus, to whose likeness we will have been conformed.

As John wrote, Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)

Paul always encouraged us to see ourselves that way now, like royalty in training. He wanted us to start living our destiny immediately by becoming worthy of our calling now. “Only let us live up to what we have already attained,” he said. (Phil. 3:16)

And Peter agreed.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9)

Calling us a royal priesthood is the same as saying we’ll be Kings and Priests.

And that brings us full circle to the verse that started me thinking along these lines in the first place. So what do we think? Should it read,

You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” (Rev. 5:10 NIV, etc.).

Or does this version seem to be more consistent with the other Scriptures we’ve looked at,

You have made us to be kings and priests to serve our God, and we will reign on the earth.” (Rev. 5:10 KJV, YLT)

Remember, the Greek word for King and Kingdom is the same, differing only by gender. King is the masculine form, and according to Strong’s concordance it’s the one used in Rev. 5:10. In 118 appearances in the New Testament it’s never translated Kingdom, which is the feminine form of the word and has a different Strong’s number. So the verse is more grammatically and theologically correct when it’s translated Kings and Priests, which defines only the Church, rather than a kingdom and priests. The Royal Family model gives us an another exciting glimpse into the nature of our eternal destiny.

This Is Your Life

For a good part of the Kingdom Age life on Earth will be a very pleasant, trouble free existence, especially in Israel.

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills. I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. (Amos 9:13-14)

“Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with cane in hand because of his age. The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.” (Zechariah 8:4-5)

Every man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken. (Micah 4:4)

But life in the New Jerusalem will exceed this by such an order of magnitude that there’s no comparison. I’m convinced that the reason the Bible doesn’t say much about what’s in store for us is because it defies description. We simply could not believe it.

As it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” – but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. (1 Cor. 2:8-10). We can only imagine. 03-06-10

Q. I recently read that the idea of eternal punishment came about “because of a preconceived, unbiblical notion that the soul is immortal (see 1 Tim. 6:15-16). We have read eternal torment into the Scriptures when it was never intended for mankind. Hell was created for Satan and his Angels, not for Mankind and it is Satan and his demonic hordes who will be consigned to Hell and its torments eternally.” Do you believe 1 Tim. 6:15-16 actually means mans soul is not immortal and that it could be destroyed after serving a period of time in Hell?

A. This is a very weak argument. 1 Tim 6:15-16 says that only God is immortal, which simply means that he will never die. In 1 Cor. 15:53 Paul, the same writer, said that at the rapture/ resurrection all believers will become immortal. Also in Matt. 25:41 Jesus said that after the so-called sheep and goat judgment, the goats (unbelievers) will be sent into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. So there will be humans there, too.

In 2 Thes. 1:9 Paul had already written that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting destruction. That literally means destruction that never ends. The same Greek word is used in the phrase everlasting life. It also means eternal, or without end. Put it all together and you realize that both believers and unbelievers will exist forever. So the question is not whether we have eternal life but how we will spend eternity.

Q. I read your site everyday and enjoy it a lot. My question is, my first child was a boy and he was still born. When I go home to be with Jesus, will he still be a baby or do babies age in heaven? I’ve ask many pastors and none have ever had a answer. Thanks for your help.

A. The reason you’ve never gotten an answer is that no one on Earth knows. The Bible doesn’t reveal any detail about our life after the Resurrection/Rapture. What it does say is that there’ll be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Rev. 21:4), so whatever your son is like when you meet him you will not experience any sadness or regret stemming from the time you’ve spent apart.

Q. Thank you for your teaching. I have benefited most from your sharing. May I follow-up on the topic of ‘Hades and Hell’ ? If there are 2 places within Hades or Sheol where the dead before the Cross went , does it mean that judgment had occured for them, that some had gone to the Paradise (like Lazarus in Luke 23:43); while others to ‘Torments’?

A. Before the cross everyone who died went to Sheol, or Hades in the Greek. Those who would eventually be given eternal life went to a place of comfort that was called Abraham’s Bosom and Paradise. All others went to a place of discomfort sometimes called Torments. Both places were temporary. Paradise was emptied after the cross when the Lord’s death opened the gates of Heaven to those who had died in faith. What we now call Hades or Hell is really the place called Torments. It will be emptied at the Great White Throne judgment at the end of the Millennium, when it’s thrown into the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:13-15).

So while our destiny is established at death, both groups will face a judgment afterward. For believers it’s the Bema Seat, where crowns are awarded for things we did on Earth (1 Cor. 3:12-15). For unbelievers it’s the great White Throne, prelude to the Lake of Fire. The lesson is that we have only this life to determine which judgment we’ll face, for man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. (Hebr. 9:24).

Q. Is there any scripture pro or con indicating whether or not those that have died in Christ and gone to heaven still remember the lives and relationships they left back on earth? I’ve been told by several people that I respect that they don’t because that might cause them to worry or suffer grief. And although that makes sense to me they can’t give me any scripture to back this up either way. Others have said that they do remember and bring up the story of Lazarus and the rich man, but is that all there is in scripture about this subject. I am wondering what your opinion on this might be.

A. Isaiah 65:17 says, “Behold I will create new heavens and a new Earth, the former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” In Rev. 21:1 John used this verse to open his description of the New Jerusalem at the beginning of the Millennium. In Rev. 21:4 he said that for its residents (the Church) there would be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away.

To me these two statements mean that by the time the Millennium begins any unpleasant memories from our old life on Earth will be erased so that nothing can inhibit the unrestrained joy we’ll experience in our new one. Whether or not this happens at the time of death for those whose lives end during the Church Age is not disclosed.

Q. I have years and years worth of questions written in my prayer journal that I want to ask someone, as soon as I get to heaven! So, will I have to ask or will we be instantly infused with all knowledge upon arrival? I have a million of them! Will I even care once I get to heaven?

A. There are a couple of verses in the Bible that seem to indicate that in our perfected state our knowledge will at least be expanded greatly. 1 Cor. 13:12 says that now we know in part but then we will know fully even as we are fully known. 1 John 3:2 says that although we currently don’t know what we will be like, we know that when the Lord appears we’ll be like Him.

From these verses I think it’s safe to say that most, if not all, of the answers to your questions will come to you as soon as you’re transformed. I think it’s also likely that many questions that seem important now will no longer seem so when we get there.

I recently lost my wonderful husband of 38 years. We made promises to meet again just “inside the eastern gate.” My thoughts frequently go to the fact that he (soul and spirit) is already with our Saviour, even though his earthly body is still here on earth. (Absent from the body / present with the Lord.) My wonderings are along this line…is he already in his mansion (room) ? What is he doing while he waits for the rapture (or death) to bring me up ? Are there any clues in scripture as to what everone already there is doing while they wait ?

A. Sorry to say the Bible offers no specific information on either the whereabouts or activities of those in Heaven awaiting the rapture. Paul did say it would be “better by far” to be there than here. (Phil. 1:23). It’s probably a good thing we don’t know more about it. If we knew what it’s like there, we’d just be more miserable here. But since they can’t achieve their full inheritance without resurrection bodies, my guess is that the dead in Christ are even more excited for the rapture than we are.

Q. I have been reading a book about the end times. The author of this book is very well known and has written several books on end-times and prophecy. He states in his book that “we will be looking down from heaven and will watch the whole Tribulation play out”. (we will have ring side seats) I have looked everywhere in the bible and can not find this.
I did not think we could look down to earth. Also I have been told by a friend who is a deacon that when someone you love dies, the angels go back and forth and tell the loved one about the funeral and how much they were loved and missed. I have never found this anywhere in scripture. Am I missing something?

A. Both these people are just giving you their opinion, and there’s no Biblical support for either one. In 1 Cor. 13:12 Paul wrote that while we only have partial knowledge now, when we get to heaven we will know fully, just as we’re fully known. To me this means we will not only know everything that’s happening, but we will also see why it has to happen in a particular way. Our entire perspective will have changed and we’ll no longer look at things the way we do now. We’ll finally understand things the way the Lord does.

Q. I have read several of your articles about life in Heaven after our earthly death and still have a question that I hope you can help me with. I was married 44 years before my wife went to be with the Lord. After several years I was reacquainted with an old high school sweetheart and we are thinking about getting married. The question that has been bothering me is how all this will work when we are all in Heaven. Thank you for all the work you put into your website as it has helped me tremendously.

A. Your marriage contract with your wife was “until death do you part.” That means it expired when she died, so you are free to marry someone else. If you do, that contract will also expire when either of you dies or the rapture comes. In Heaven there will no marriage, nor will there be any jealousy, or any other kind of inter-personal conflict. So feel free to marry if you like and don’t worry about it. Everyone will get along just fine.

Q. I am trying to understand something. Will we have the desire to sin in heaven? I understand that our sin nature will finally be gone and the tempter Satan will be dealt with but won’t we still have emotions and desires? Some of the angels sinned in heaven. I assume they had no sin nature to begin with. Wasn’t Satan also created without a sin nature? Is there anything in the Bible that gives us assurance that “sin” will be finally gone in the end or is that unknown? If the possibility is not gone then does that mean Jesus remains our intercessor for eternity?

A. Although it’s not clearly spelled out, I’ve always thought that once we’re divested of our sin nature, we’ll lose any desire to sin, even though we might retain the ability.

Ezekiel 28:15 says that Satan was blameless in all his ways until iniquity was found in him. After he convinced others to follow him in rebellion, the Bible doesn’t record any instance of other angels sinning in the angelic realm. To me that means the original group that joined him were the only ones who ever did.

Romans 8:29 says God has predestined us to be conformed to the likeness of His Son. And in 1 John 3:2 we read,

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

An alternate translation of “when He appears” is “when it is made known.” To me that means when we’re in our resurrection bodies we’ll realize we’re no longer like we used to be, and we’re not like Satan, or even the angels, but like the Lord, absolutely pure and holy.

I believe John’s promise that when the Lord comes we will be like Him is our assurance that we will no longer sin.
