New Testament Tithing, Follow Up

Q. If, as you say, tithing is a minimum standard, where in the NT does it say that the minimum standard is 10%?

The purpose of biblical tithing in the OT was to support the Levites, who were not allowed possess any property on which they could raise any stock or crops.  Tithing, in essence, was food for the Levites.  What is the purpose of NT tithing, since there is no temple and no Levitical priesthood to receive the tithe?

To Tithe Or Not To Tithe

Q. I am enjoying your articles on GraceThruFaith, however, I have a question about New Testament tithing.  Where in any of the NT epistles (not the Gospels) is the NT believer told specifically to “tithe”?  (giving 10% of gross income).

My husband and I do not “tithe”, but we give “what God purposes in our hearts to give” and we give 100% of that.  I believe giving has nothing to do with “how much”, but has everything to do with the heart of the giver.

Tithing To Other Ministries Instead Of The Church

Q. All I ever hear about tithing is that we’re supposed to give 10% to the church. My mother is a big pusher over this, often making me feel ashamed that I’m not giving 10% of my money on a weekly basis to my church. I don’t tell her, but I give money to people where the spirit leads me to. (I’m not even sure if I’m supposed to tell you that)

So am I still supposed to give 10% on top of the other expenses that I help out with? I just don’t want to feel like my giving is worth nothing. Thank You.

Another Tithing Question

Q. I have read various articles regarding the Tithe and have found that the New Testament does not include tithing like it is in the Old Testament and especially the way it is explained in Malachi. Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law and tithing is in the law.  Jesus taught to give as you purpose in your heart not grudgingly or of necessity.

Giving Our First Fruits

Q. I just came across your section on tithing and it brought up a question I have had for a long time.  Since taxes get taken out of our gross pay before we even see the check, how can we give the first fruits?   Is there a way that you know of to pay our taxes differently so that we can truly give our first fruits to Him?   And it says the first fruits of our increase, does this mean non financial things also?  Someone had donated a car to us and I’m not sure how to deal with that.  And what about time?  Every day we are given 24 more hours, can you imagine what our world would be like if we all tithed 10 percent of our time to Him? Tithing Vs. Paying Debts

Q. I appreciate your insight and thank you for your ministry.  If you have the time to help with this question, I would appreciate it.

I am trying to balance tithing vs. paying off debt.  My question to you is, do I not tithe at all, and focus all the allowable funds towards debt?  Do I split the debt payments and tithing?  Or do I tithe 10% and what’s left over pay towards debt?  Read Post »

Giving To Get?

Q. At our church, Malachi 3: v10 is often quoted when they talk about giving. If they would just say that you are to give 10% and let it go, I would be ok, but they quote Mal. 3: v10 and say test God and see if the floodgates will not be opened. I think I have tested God and in my opinion the floodgates have not been opened. I understand that you are supposed to give out of grattitude of what God has done for you and not because of what you will get from God.  My question is,  why do churches use Mal. 3 v10 as a tool for encouraging people to give? A Question On Tithing

Q. I have a question about an article you wrote on tithing, you said: “great blessings are given to those who voluntarily follow God’s Law”. Will you explain what you meant by that statement? Read Post »

Do I Have To Tithe On Gifts?

Q. I was told to tithe off of gifts too.  Is this biblical?   I tithe off of my gross & also give offerings.  I thought tithing was off of your “income” (ex.  paychecks, investment profits) but I’ve never heard it taught where you also tithe off of gifts.  I do not want to be under a curse, please give me your views.  Read Post »

Where To Tithe?

Q. Do we have to tithe only to the local church and then its up to the leaders to distribute the money accordingly?  A pastor said we are not to give to different places but to the local church and then  its the leaders who decide where it goes as far as meeting the needs of the church?  His support for this view was based on Paul did when he took the money given in Corinth to help the church in Jerusalem.
