Q. What is your thought on the subject of a “few” will be saved? I’m having a conversation with someone that is in the UPC church and after showing him how God is working throughout the world today in countries like India, china, and even in the Middle East. he rejects this as the real work of God because only a few would be saved. What would you say to this?
Matthew 22:14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Luke 13:24″Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.
A. First of all how does he know that only a few will be saved? I hear estimates of up to 175,000 per day from India, Africa, and China! And second these verses constitute a general observation, and are not meant to define a specific situation. Of all the people ever born (about 12 billion) a relatively small percentage will make it to heaven, but at different points in history there have been huge harvests of souls.
We know that overall there’ll be a lot fewer saved than many people think. For example some denominations believe that membership is all that’s required, others that infant baptism brings salvation, still others that obeying certain laws does it. People outside of Christianity have their views on salvation, and some Christian denominations teach that if these others are sincere in their faith, they’ll make it too. The narrow way is to trust Jesus and Him alone, but many will try anything but that and will be surprised to learn that the small gate, the narrow door He spoke about is Him (John 10:7).
