Q. I have a question about hell. It is stated many times throughout scripture that hell wasn’t designed for man, only his angels and Satan. I take the position that Satan is the master tormentor as well as liar. If that’s the case who/what will there be to give Satan the same amount of torment that we would endure? I guess what I’m asking is, won’t Satan in hell be analogous to a bad child sent to his room for a time out? What kind of torment is greater than Satan?
A. Rev. 20:10 says, “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
Here’s what that means. They’ll be in a lake filled with liquid sulfur that’s on fire. They can’t get out of it and they can’t die. They just burn in that stinking fire for ever. The pain will be intense. They won’t be able to breathe without getting lungs full of sulfur smoke. It’ll smell like the worst rotten eggs ever and the smoke will burn their eyes and throats and lungs. Get the picture? Can you imagine the torment they’ll have to endure?
