What Does Righteous Mean?

Q. I recently heard a high profile Bible teacher on Christian TV describe the meaning of righteous as  “those who give”.  He said this was the definition in Hebrew.  I tried to use my Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, but don’t seem very adept at using it.  Could you please give me the literal translation of this word in both Hebrew and Greek?

A. The Hebrew word for righteous is tsaddiyq (sad-eek).  It appears 206 times in the Old Testament and means to be just or lawful.  The Greek word for righteous is dikaios (dee-kay-os).   The words innocent, faultless, and guiltless are also included as definitions in the 81 times it’s used in the New Testament.  I don’t know where the teacher you mentioned got the idea that the word means “those who give” in Hebrew.
