Does Faith Come By Hearing?

Published: June 26, 2023 (Originally published: June 12, 2009)
Q

I’m having trouble understanding Romans 10:17. It says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Why didn’t Paul just say “Faith comes by hearing the Word of God”?

Interpreting Scripture

Published: June 26, 2023 (Originally published: June 21, 2009)
Q

We all know that there are different methods of interpreting Scripture. Some “spiritualize” it and attribute it to allegory. Others, such as me and you interpret Scripture “literally, historically and grammatically.” Is there any place in Scripture where God told us how he wanted us to interpret his Word? How did we come to the consensus that Scripture was to be interpreted “this” way as opposed to “that” way?

Where’s The Ark Of The Covenant?

Published: June 27, 2023 (Originally published: June 21, 2009)
Q

I remember reading somewhere that the High Priest would remove the Ark of the covenant from the Holy of Holies during an evil king’s reign and then return it during a righteous Kings reign. 2 Chronicles chapter 29 hints at this. Was this a common practice? If so, would that indicate a “hiding” place somewhere other than the Temple itself?

I heard Israel’s last righteous king Josiah had the Ark returned to the Temple during his reign as well, yet I haven’t found the supporting scripture. These items are not listed as part of the inventory given of what the Babylonians carried off. Could these items have been hidden and not destroyed with the temple?

How To Tell If Personal Prophecies Are Real

Published: June 27, 2023 (Originally published: June 26, 2009)
Q

I have read that the office of Apostles and Prophets are not needed today as everything we need to know about the future is answered in scripture. How can we know that personal prophecies are real?

Have I Done Enough?

Published: June 28, 2023 (Originally published: June 5, 2009)
Q

Thanks for your wonderful site. My wife and I have been saved and filled with the Holy Spirit for the past 23 years. Recently she has become concerned about what God thinks of her and whether she is measuring up to his standards. We both live reasonably conservative lives, pray regularly, read the Bible, help others, etc. However, while we know that we’re not saved by works, she is concerned that God will be upset with her for not achieving much in her life and perhaps she may therefore not ‘make it into heaven’. What would you say to someone who thinks this?

Cast All Our Cares Upon Him

Published: June 28, 2023 (Originally published: June 9, 2009)
Q

Now that Jesus Christ lives through us, and His life is in us, does that mean all of our earthly issues are His issues, and all concerns of our earthly life are His concerns? And so we can and have to fully trust Him about our happiness and welfare in everything because He’s standing by our side?

Joseph’s Dreams

Published: June 28, 2023 (Originally published: June 27, 2009)
Q

I have a question about Genesis 37:9-10. Joseph has a dream that his brothers and father and mother will bow down to him. Later on when Joseph is in Egypt it appears that his mother did not come to bow down to Joseph because she died. What can this moon be referring to and how was it fulfilled?

I Was The Prodigal Son

Published: June 29, 2023 (Originally published: April 11, 2013)
Q

Re: Luke 15:32 “It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.” This verse of the prodigal son sounds like the Son who went away to riotous living was dead until he came home to his father. How does this work with OSAS? I understand that the son knew the father before he left home and then was lost/dead. When I was about 7 years old, I asked the Lord to save me. Later I went on to riotous living for a number of years. Then I came back to the Lord and have since been blessed like never before. I feel like I am the son spoken of in this verse. Does this mean that while I was engaged in riotous living, I was not saved, or “dead”?
