Clarifying Isaiah 17

Published: October 29, 2008 (Originally published: October 28, 2008)
Q

In Isaiah 17, the scripture makes reference to the ‘splendor of Jacob will fade.’ This appears immediately after the well-known scripture regarding the destruction of Damascas in one night. Do you believe that a nuclear exchange between Israel and Damascus will be the cause of Israel’s emaciation?

Syria Before Iran?

According to my understanding of scriptures, destruction of Damascus should precede Ezekiel 38 War. Since Ezekiel 38:5-6 does not mentioned anything about Syria. I believe destruction of Damascus will inevitably lead to Ezekiel 38 war. Appreciate receiving your comments.

I disagree with your suggestion that Jeremiah 49:23-27 was fulfilled during the Babylonian conquest. There are two primary reasons for this. 1.) Jer. 49:23 says that there is trouble on the sea, probably alluding to the Mediterranean Sea, and Nebuchadnezzar did not conquer from the sea. 2.) More convincingly is Jer. 49:25 that asks the rhetorical question, “Why is the city of praise not deserted, the city of My joy?” This city would be Jerusalem, and Jerusalem was destroyed during the Babylonian conquest.

Isaiah 17, An Oracle Against Damascus

Published: June 6, 2015 (Originally published: June 5, 2010)

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

In the past couple of years, it has become even clearer that Isaiah’s prophecy of the destruction of Damascus will soon come to fulfillment, perhaps being part of the Psalm 83 scenario I’ve written about.  If so, it would explain why Syria is not included among the coalition of Muslim nations who will gather against Israel in the Battle of Ezekiel 38.

War With Syria?

Published: September 13, 2007 (Originally published: September 13, 2007)
Q

We have been watching with great interest the developments in the Mid East this past week in connection with Israeli intrusion into Syrian airspace. Do you think this intrusion might lead to war? We would appreciate it if you could write an article on Isa. 17 and Damascus in view of all the things that are happening in the Mid East. I know you wrote an article in the fall of 2006 regarding this, but a lot has happened since then. Please give us a new perspective on what you feel Isa.17 means as of today. Do you think the destruction of Damascus is in the immediate future?

Connecting Iran And Syria

Published: October 13, 2009 (Originally published: October 13, 2009)
Q

I hear a lot these days in the secular news about the probability of Israel preemptively attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities. I also read (almost exclusively) by Christian teachers that Damascus is going to be destroyed, most likely by a nuclear attack. You yourself have stated that you believe it could happen before the rapture. Do you think these two events could somehow be related?

Warnings about Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities are constantly in the news. Damascus, on the other hand, seems to be under the radar. Is there any reason it would be attacked in light of current events? Could an attack by Israel against Iran somehow lead to involvement by Syria? Does the Bible say anything about Iran and Syria in this context?

Will the rapture happen before Damascus being in ruins or after? I have heard more people say before then after, but some might argue that its a safety thing. Christians being in Syria so they will be raptured before Damascus is destroyed?

Commentary by Jack Kelley

See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid” (Isaiah 17:1-2).

The Timing Of Isaiah 17

Published: June 18, 2007 (Originally published: June 18, 2007)
Q

I would like to know if there is any evidence of a general time frame for the Isaiah 17 prophecy to be fulfilled? I see many Bible teachers mentioning that it could be fulfilled pretty soon given the current situation in Syria. Do you think there’s any merit to this view that the Bible might not be totally clear on when the prophecy will be fulfilled?
