The Seven “I AM” Statements In John

This entry is part 2 of 2 in the series Summarizing John's Gospel

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

Recently I completely re-vamped a study I had originally written in 2003, entitled “The Seven Miracles In John” .  In it I showed how John selected these seven miracles specifically for their ability to help us believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be, and that by believing we might have eternal life.

In addition to these seven miracles John’s gospel contains seven “I am” statements.  Their focus is on what happens after we become believers.  You can call them part 2 of John’s underlying message to the Church.   In this study, we’ll  look at these seven “I am” statements to see what they’ll tell us.  Here’s the first one.

Our Heavenly Body

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you (John 14:2).

Recently I had someone object to my belief that Jesus was referring to our eternal home in the New Jerusalem when He said this. This person’s opinion is that Jesus was talking about our post resurrection body and he cited 2 Cor. 5:1-2 in support of it.

He Who Has Ears, Let Him Hear

This phrase appears 7 times in the gospels; 8 if you count Mark 4:23. (Most modern translations omit that one.) Two are duplicates of Matt 13:9 having to do with the Sower and the seed. A variation, “he who has an ear” appears 7 times in Rev 2-3, and another version, “let the reader understand” appears in Matt 24:15. These words, only used by the Lord, seem to underscore something important. It’s as if He’s saying, “Pay attention now. This part is not optional.”  Adding them up gives us 14 passages that are required understanding for the believer.

If You Are Faithful to Confess

“This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly each day: two lambs a year old. Offer one in the morning and the other at twilight. (Exodus 29:38-39)

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness  (1 John 1:8-9)

Our Life Is A Ministry

Commentary by Jack Kelley

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
(2 Cor. 1:3-5)

Is God In Total Control Of Everything?

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

There’s a theory, only hinted at in Scripture, that Planet Earth had been the domain of Satan prior to his rebellion. Although he was only a created being, Satan was an enormously powerful dignitary in God’s Universe (Jude 1:9). He was the overseer of the Cherubim (the guardians of God’s Throne) and a leader of the angelic host. He was God’s most impressive creation (Ezekiel 28:12-15). Because of his position, his power, and his beauty he became proud and rebelled (Ezekiel 28:17, Isaiah 14:13-14), bringing about a judgment that destroyed planet Earth.

The Salt Of The Earth

Commentary by Jack Kelley

A simple line in Mark 9:50 says so much. It’s almost a throw-away and yet when taken in light of the surrounding passage it speaks volumes. “Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

The Spirit of Anti-Christ

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. (1 John 2:18-19)

The Promise Of A Lifetime

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matt. 6:31-33).
