Are Vasectomies Biblically OK?

Q

I read your website practically daily and respect your thoughts and opinions. I have a personal question I pray you will answer. I have 4 kids and my wife and I desire no more. Is it Biblical to get a vasectomy? Could you support your view Biblically?

A

I don’t believe there is a Biblical prohibition against getting a vasectomy. In Isaiah 56:3-5 the Lord promised that even eunuchs who followed the ways of the Lord would be welcome in His house and would receive a reward better than children.

A eunuch was a man who was voluntarily or forcibly castrated. Some kings would have their closest advisers castrated. It was believed that castration would curtail male aggressiveness and make the adviser less likely to lead or participate in a palace revolt. There’s a tradition that Nebuchadnezzar had Daniel castrated.

And the male staff who guarded the King’s harem were also castrated for obvious reasons.

Personally, I think a couple who’ve had 4 children have fulfilled the Lord’s command to “be fruitful and increase in number” (Genesis 1:28). If after prayer you feel a peace about doing this, I would say go ahead with a clear conscience.
