Balancing What We Want With What Is Best

Q

I know what I want in a wife, (besides looks) like a love for God, desire to raise children, and common mission. But, does the Bible say much about choosing? Where is the balance between what we want and what is best?

A

Psalm 37:4 says when we delight ourselves in the Lord He will give us the desires of our heart. To me this means He will place in our heart the things He wants us to desire and then He will give them to us.

Romans 8:28 says God is working everything together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. The Greek word for love in this verse means to be completely given over to the object of one’s love, in other words, to the Lord.

The way we implement these verses is explained in Romans 12:1-2. We offer our lives to the Lord as a living sacrifice. We no longer conform to the pattern of this world but are transformed by the renewing of our minds. In doing so we discover His will for us.

Therefore, when we are walking with the Lord, what we want and what is best become the same.
