Destruction Or Torment

Q

I heard a teaching on a TV show called “It Is Written.” The speaker claimed that hell has an end. That at the 2nd death, hell will be burned up, and all that are in it will cease to exist. Is the 2nd death after the Great White Throne Judgment, at the end of the Millennium? Will hell cease to exist at that time, with those in it destined to non-existence?

A

“It is Written” is a production of the 7th day Adventist Church, for the purpose of explaining the official position of that group.

Rev. 20: 11-15 describes the judgment of the unsaved at the end of the Millennium. At this judgment they will be raised from death, the sea, and Hades (Hell) and will be judged according to their works. Then death and Hades will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.

The Lake of Fire is not a method of destruction, like a vast incinerator. If it was there would be no purpose in judging the unsaved according to what they had done (Rev. 20:13). It is a place of eternal torment.

Many people don’t realize that Hades (Hell) is a temporary place where the the unsaved dead go to await the final judgment at the end of the Millennium. After that judgment, those whose names are written in the book of life will enter eternity where there will be no more death and no more unbelievers. Those whose names are not in the book of life will go into the Lake of fire (Rev. 20:15).
