Do We Reap What We Sow?

Q

My question is about sowing of seed and reaping. Do you believe it is Biblical to expect if I sow the seed of money I can expect a reaping of money? Or if I sow the seed of smiles will I reap smiles? The Bible does say you reap what you sow.

A

The Scripture you’re quoting is Galatians 6:7-8.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

As you can see it deals with the general nature of seeds one sows, not specific actions. But there appears to be some truth to what you say. Someone who smiles a lot will usually receive more smiles in return. And generous givers are often blessed financially. But this is because their generosity is an expression of gratitude for what they already have received, not for what they hope to receive. According to Luke 6:38 and 2 Cor. 9:6, the Lord is pleased when we’re generous toward others and rewards us accordingly.
