Does God Make Us Sick?

Q

I know someone who says she has a deliverance ministry. She says that all sicknesses and diseases are from un-repented ‘sins’ in us! She believes if you repent enough (asking God to show you all the sins connected with a particular sickness/disease) and you repent that you eventually get deliverance and healed from those problems! She says that God puts and uses these diseases and sickness so we will repent and be made pure and perfect, so on the Day, we will be able to stand before The Lord! My question to you is: Does God put these sickness and diseases on us?

A

This claim is easily debunked. When the rapture comes, believers will be instantaneously transformed from mortal to immortal, from corruptible to incorruptible (1 Cor. 15:51-53). God has neither the need or desire to put us through periods of painful sickness or disease to purify our earthly bodies, because these bodies will never stand before Him.

As for our sins, they were all forgiven at the cross. We already are a New Creation in His sight (2 cor. 5:17) with a righteousness from God that comes through Jesus Christ to all who believe (Romans 3:21-24).

I don’t deny that sickness and disease originally came into the world because of the sin of our first parents. I also know that many suffer illness from the effects of their sins, such as guilt, anger, resentment, hatred, etc. But to say that God gives us these illnesses for the purpose of perfecting us is a false teaching that casts doubt on His character by making Him responsible for the adverse effects of our behavior.
