Drawing Nearer To God
Q. How can you draw nearer to God? As Matthew 7:7-8 says, I ask and seek and knock and I desire to draw nearer but I still feel distanced from Him. I have asked Him to reveal Himself to me, but I still feel a lot of times my prayers aren’t getting very far. In John 6:44 it says that no one comes to God unless we are drawn by Him, so does that mean because I am seeking after Him that it was Him that drew me to begin with?
A. If you are seeking after God it’s because He’s drawing you, but He’s drawing you because He knew from the beginning of time that you would ask Him to save you from your sins (Romans 8:28-29). If you haven’t already done so, do that first.
If you’re already saved James 4:8 tells when we draw near to God He’ll draw near to us. He has revealed Himself to us in His Word, so if you want a closer relationship you only have to spend more time in His word and in prayer.
Remember as you read that the goal is not just to know more about Him, the goal is to know Him. Converse with Him as you read. Ask Him about things you don’t understand. Thank him for things you do understand.
