Except Those Days Be Shortened

Q

RE: Matt. 24:22 “Except those days be shortened”. Is it possible that the length of the days may be shortened, for instance 16 hours instead of 24 hours? Thank you for the time and effort you spend on this wonderful site.

A

The Earth’s circumference at the equator is said to be 24,901.55 miles. Since it takes 24 hours (one day) for the earth to make one revolution on it’s axis, that means it’s spinning at just over 1000 miles per hour. We’re all created in such a way that we aren’t aware of this, and our gravitational force is sufficient to keeping us from flying off into space. But for the Earth to suddenly began revolving once every 16 hours, it’s spin rate would have to increase to 1556 miles per hour. Gravity would no longer be able to hold us on the ground and it would suddenly seem as if there was a constant wind blowing at over 500 miles per hour. Hardly anything on Earth could withstand such a force.

Since the Bible is very clear in saying the Great Tribulation is 3 1/2 years long, the Lord couldn’t have contradicted that fact in Matt. 24:22 by saying it would be stopped ahead of time. And we can see that increasing the spin rate isn’t the answer either. I think it’s much more likely that He was saying if the Great Tribulation was allowed to continue to it’s ultimate conclusion not a single soul would survive. But for the sake of the elect He will end it at the appointed time, 1260 days after it begins.
