Explaining Heaven

Q

My 90 year old Uncle, who is not a believer, is feeling God’s tugging on behalf of prayers. He has not been open to spiritual conversation however, due to many health problems, he recently questioned the existence of Heaven. What scriptures would help convince him of the reality of Heaven?

A

I think the clearest verses have to do with the concept of eternal life. Jesus promised this to believers several times during His ministry in places like John 3:16, John 6:40 and John 11:25-26.

Paul wrote that upon death the spirits of believers leave their dead bodies and go directly to be with the Lord. He explained this in 2 Cor. 5:6-9 and Phil. 1:21-24.

Paul also said the spirits of these believers will receive new immortal bodies at the resurrection. These are the bodies in which they will live eternally with God. 1 Thes. 4:16-17 and 1 Cor. 15:51-53 explain that this will happen at the same time that all living believers are changed from mortal to immortal without passing through death. Together we’ll all live forever with the Lord. Jesus also spoke of this in John 14:1-3 where He said He was going to His Father’s house to prepare a place for us, and would return to take us there.

Viewed as a whole, these Scripture passages show that believers need have no fear of death, but can actually look forward to a much better life to come, one that will last forever.
