Mary, Jesus, And The Babylonian Religion

Q

Is it true that Orthodox Jews believe that Christians are an offshoot of the Babylonian religious system? What is your argument against this? On the issue of Jesus and Mary vs. Semiramis and Tammuz, how could the counterfeit come first even before the prophets had written what was prophesied?

A

I’m not familiar with the claim that Jews believe Christians are an offshoot of the Babylonian religious system. But I have heard the idea that Mary and Jesus are the Christian adaptation of the legend of Babylonian queen Semiramis and her son Tammuz (who was allegedly conceived by the sun god) from numerous unbelievers.

This corruption of a virgin birth can be found in several pagan mythologies. It stems from Genesis 3:15 where God swore that an offspring of Eve’s would defeat Satan. It led to the phrase “the seed of the woman” becoming a messianic term. Genesis 3:15 is the first appearance of the promise of a virgin birth (seed comes from the man) which predates all the pagan religions.
