Seed Of The Serpent

Q

I read your website often. It’s a blessing to me. My question is about Genesis 3:15 which states “And I will put enmity between thee (the serpent) and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” I believe the woman is Israel and her seed is Jesus. Who then is the seed of Satan? Since Jesus is the literal seed, is there a literal seed of Satan?

A

The word translated seed can also mean offspring, or descendant. In Genesis 3:15 the woman the Lord was speaking about was Eve, so He was referring to a descendant of hers being opposed by a descendant of the serpent. Since in the literal sense seed comes from the male, this is seen by many as the first prophecy of the virgin birth. It was ultimately fulfilled in Mary, a descendant of Eve’s, who gave birth to Jesus.

This makes those opposed to Him the seed of the serpent. For example Jesus described the religious leaders of His day as being snakes, and a brood of vipers (Matt. 23:33). He said their father was the devil (John 8:44). This was another way of saying, “seed of the serpent.” The seed of the serpent prophecy will ultimately be fulfilled in the anti-Christ, who will lead the world in opposition to Jesus.
