Will The Messiah Reign Forever?

Q

I was just reading in John 12:34 where the Jewish people told Christ that they knew from the Law that the Christ would remain forever. I was just wondering what passages gave them that interpretation? Thank you so much for your ministry!

A

Here are a couple of examples. Isaiah 9:7 says,

“He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.”

Daniel 2:44 says,

“In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.”

From our perspective, we can see that both these passages refer to the time when the Lord returns to set up His Kingdom at the second coming. But even though the Old Testament hinted at this, the Jewish people did not understand things this way. They thought the Messiah would come once, defeat Israel’s enemies, establish His kingdom, and never leave. Many Jewish people still do not accept Jesus as their Messiah because He didn’t fulfill these prophecies when He was here.
