Q. In the end times, there’s supposed to be a great falling away. But I have no clue if it’s people of the Lord falling away, or just people in general not coming for the Lord. What do you think? What does scripture have to say? Thank you so much.
A. I believe that the great falling away, or apostasy, of 2 Thes. 2:3 is the departure of those who claim to be believers, but are not, from the true Gospel to a counterfeit one. I see this taking place in two ways today. The first can be found in the remarkable growth of the so-called emerging church movement, and the second is in the increasing number of people from evangelical churches who are leaving to join the Catholic church.
Paul warned Timothy about this in such detail that is seems like he was really describing our times.
“The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
