Today we are in John 2:1-12

John 2:1-12

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

With this, the first recorded miracle of Jesus, He revealed His glory, and his disciples believed in Him. All because His mom asked Him to. Jesus hadn’t planned on revealing His glory that day, but He decided to do a favor for His mom. And it wasn’t even an emergency. It was a party. If we were making a list of non-dire things, wine for a party might be near the top. But, for the couple, this was an incredibly important day. And, Jesus knew it was important to His mom. Relationships matter to Jesus. The little things matter to Jesus, too. If anyone tries to tell you that you can only pray for big important things, you can remember this passage.

Mary also gave us the best advice for our day as well.  Do whatever He tells you. This goes in the simple but not easy category. I want my ears to be so well tuned to His voice that I can hear each prompting and then go and do everything He tells me.

Options for further  journaling or discussion throughout the challenge:

  • Choose a part of the passage to write out by hand. Writing by hand helps us slow down and focus on what the Lord might highlight for us in the passage. Our brains can focus and remember better by writing than just reading alone.
  • Journal about what the passage brings to mind. Does the passage tell us anything about God? Does it tell us anything about our response to Him?
  • Does your heart respond in gratitude to any part of the passage? Write or pray your gratitude to the Lord.

We’ll see you tomorrow, for Day 7 and John 3:1-17
