Numbers 21:4-9

The Bronze Snake

They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way;they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

John 8:21-30

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.

The Israelites had grown so accustomed to the miracle, that they came to detest the bread from heaven. They took the provision for granted and hardened their hearts with ingratitude.

The Pharisees stood before the true bread from heaven, and, just like their ancestors, they had hardened their hearts to the Lord’s provision for them. God had brought them the true bread that gives life (John 6:35), the fulfillment of all they’ve been waiting for, but they were missing Him. Both groups were given miraculous provision from heaven, and both took it for granted and grew to detest their provision.

Like the bronze serpent was lifted up with Moses, so will Jesus be lifted up before them, and all who look to Him will be saved. And since then, even after that first time looking up, we continue to look to Him.  Just like the Israelites, we need this bread from heaven each day.

The Lord is still raining down provision from heaven, and may we receive it with glad and grateful hearts. May we keep our hearts open and soft to all He does for us, and may we remain ever grateful. And may we seek Him, the true bread, over all His gifts. ♥

Options for further  journaling or discussion throughout the challenge:

  • Choose a part of the passage to write out by hand. Writing by hand helps us slow down and focus on what the Lord might highlight for us in the passage. Our brains can focus and remember better by writing than just reading alone.
  • Journal about what the passage brings to mind. Does the passage tell us anything about God? Does it tell us anything about our response to Him?
  • Does your heart respond in gratitude to any part of the passage? Write or pray your gratitude to the Lord.

We’ll see you tomorrow for Day 31,  in Psalm 40 and Hebrews 10
