Am I A Sorceress?

Q

I have a drug dependency problem. I love the Lord so much. I have tried and tried to quit. I have begged Him to take it from me. I hate, hate, hate having this dependency! I just can’t seem to get rid of it.

My question to you is this – when it talks about sorcery in the Bible, I have read that this really means drug use, instead of some sort of witchcraft. I know that sorcerers are an abomination to the Lord. I don’t want to be that! I really do love Him. Please help me sort this out. Do you have a word of knowledge for me? I want so much to get rid of this curse. I just don’t know how. God bless you for your wisdom.

In Rev. 9:21 the Greek word translated sorcery (KJV) or magic arts (NIV) is pharmakeia. It’s primary meaning pertains to the use or administration of drugs, and is the origin of the English word pharmacy. It only appears 3 times in the Bible and is translated sorcery twice (Rev. 9:21 & 18:23), and witchcraft once (Gal. 5:20). probably due to its metaphorical meaning as having to do with “the deceptions and seductions of idolatry.”

When you asked the Lord to let His death pay for your sins He agreed, even though He knew every sin you ever had or ever would commit. That means He knows you’re not a sorceress or a witch, but someone who has become addicted to a chemical substance. I don’t know what kind of dependency you have or how serious it is, but perhaps knowing that the Lord loves you just as you are, and considers you to be as righteous as He (2 Cor. 5:21) is will help you find in Him the strength to break this hold on you.
