Are Matt. 10 And 16 History or Prophecy?

Q

I would like to hear your explanation of Mat.10:33 and Mat.16:28. I have read that some believe that this was to take place in that generation?

A

Matt. 10:33 refers to the Great White Throne Judgment at the end of the Millennium, when all unbelievers will be resurrected for judgment. It’s described in Rev. 20:11-15. Some scholars try to consign all of Matt. 10 to history as instructions to the disciples. But beginning in verse 21, I believe the balance of the chapter contains descriptions that exceed the experiences of the first century. Verse 33 is one of them.

Matt. 16:28 points to the Mt. of Transfiguration (which takes place in the following chapter) where Peter, James, and John saw Jesus glorified and speaking with Moses and Elijah about the 2nd Coming. Peter spoke of this experience in 2 Peter 1:16-18. Some of those who follow the Preterist view (all Bible prophecy has been fulfilled) try to say it fulfilled the prophecies of the 2nd Coming, but their conclusions are not consistent with a literal interpretation of Scripture.
