Ask, Seek, And Knock

Q

On what contextual basis do you appropriate the section of Matthew 7:7-8 (Ask and it shall be given) to salvation?

A

In Matt. 7:7-8 ask, seek, and knock are used in a general way, not specific to any subject. However in verses 9-11 bread ( bread of life) and fish (symbol of the Church) are examples of gifts that God will give to those who ask. It’s even clearer in the parallel passage in Luke 11: 9-13 where the subject of ask, seek, and knock is used in reference to the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is given at the moment of salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14).

The idea that everyone who asks for salvation will receive it is further supported by Peter (Acts 2:21), and Paul (Romans 10:13) who both quoted Joel 2:32, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
