Can It Really Be That Simple?

Q

I know a person who believes Jesus is God, that He died for our salvation and rose again ascending into Heaven. The person believes he is a sinner in need of salvation, has confessed his sins and repented but can’t believe it is that easy to be born again. He says all his life he has been told things only to find out in the end that he was mislead, that what he did wasn’t enough to receive his reward and believes that applies to salvation as well. He thinks there has to be more, that just having faith is not enough. He also says that how can people be born again and keep on sinning and still be saved? What do I say?

A

You say, “we’re saved because of what we believe, not because of how we behave” and then prove it to him from the Bible. In the Gospel of John alone you can take Him to John 1:12-13, John 3:16, John 5:24, John 6:28-29, and John 6:40.

Matt. 7:7-8 and Romans 10:13 say everyone who asks for salvation receives it. Ephesians 2:8-9 and Titus 3:4-7 show us our salvation is by the grace of God, not because of anything we’ve done to deserve it. Romans 3:21-24 say we have a righteousness from God apart from the Law which comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, because everyone has sinned and falls short of the glory of God.

Then I would show him that once we believe we belong to the Lord there’s nothing anyone on earth can do to change that. Read John 10:27-30, Romans 8:1, Romans 8:38-39, 2 Cor. 1:21-22, 2 Cor. 5:5, Ephes. 1:13-14, Ephes 4:30.

Finally, have him read Romans 7:14-20 where Paul said even he couldn’t stop sinning, but that for believers, God no longer counts our sins against us. He can do this because Hebrews 10:12-14 says by one sacrifice He has made us perfect forever. Then finish up with 1 John 1:9 which tells us when we do sin we can confess and God will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Every time. The only One whose word he has to take for this is God’s.

The simple fact is, if this man believes everything you say he believes then he meets all the requirements for salvation. All he has to do now is to accept and receive it.
