Comparing Amos 5 and Acts 7

Q

Can you tell me what star is referred to in Amos 5:26 (“…the star of your gods which you made for yourselves.”) and the star in Acts 7:43 (“You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god Rompha, the images which you made to worship.”)? Are these the same? Thank you for your wonderful ministry.

A

In Acts 7:42-43 Stephen was quoting from the Septuagint (Greek) version of Amos 5. The Greek translation is the one most often used for New Testament quotes, so in essence the answer to your question is yes, they’re the same.

It’s good to remember that the Old Testament contained in modern Bibles is a translation from Hebrew, not Greek. That’s why the quotes sometimes seem different when we look them up. Amos 5:26 is a good example. There’s a question whether the Hebrew language was referring to a specific god or not. The phrase “star of your god” could also mean “star-god.”
