I was reading Psalm 51 and noting that in vs 11 David prays that the Lord take not His Holy Spirit from him. Since David was not part of the church, did he have a legitimate fear of losing his relationship with the Lord (in other words his salvation)?

The indwelling Holy Spirit is only guaranteed to the Church. No person or group before or after the Church has had or will have this privilege. David knew he could lose the Holy Spirit because he’d been around when that very thing happened to Saul, his predecessor (1 Samuel 16:14).
