Do Any Countries Beside Israel Have A Covenant With God?

Q

Which countries did have a national covenant with God besides Israel? I hear Christians quote the scripture 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Could this be a scripture for any country, or just Israel? I think if any country, as a whole, did get on their knees and follow the advice of 2 Chronicles 7:14, God would certainly take notice. So, did any other countries have a covenant with God?

A

Israel is the only nation on Earth that has had and will have a national covenant with God.

I believe 2 Chronicles 7:14 is intended for Israel for two reasons. One, God is speaking to those He calls “My people” which tells us He was in a covenant relationship with them, and two he is promising that under the conditions He set forth He will heal their land. Only one nation consists of people God calls His, and who dwell in a specific land, and that’s Israel.

The Church is the only other group God has a covenant relationship with, but ours is not a national covenant, it’s a personal one. Also, the Church was not given a specific land on Earth. Our citizenship is in Heaven (Phil. 3:20). From God’s perspective, when we joined the Church we ceased belonging to any nation and our citizenship was transferred there.

Therefore, even if every person in a particular nation fell to their knees, confessed Jesus as their Savior, and asked God to forgive their sins, it wouldn’t save that nation. Instead, it would mean that the people from that nation would be taken to heaven along with the rest of the Church.
